Partnerships with other charities and organisations remain a key feature of many Kids Kabin activities, and one recent collaboration, with Youth Focus: North East led to our Middlesbrough team taking part in a secondary school enrichment project.

Thanks originally to a grant from National Citizen Service and the government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Kids Kabin was one of several organisations to be part of this work to offer extra activities for young people in identified Education Investment Areas (EIAs), and we'll be involved until the end of the current school year.

Students in Years 7 and 8 from Trinity Catholic College and Unity City Academy (UCA) sign up for sessions each Monday to learn how to cook on a budget or basic sewing, with the first of these options proving most popular so far!

Recipes have included pizza, sausage rolls, and cupcakes, with more budget-friendly options yet to be made.

One participant Dominic, said of his toad-in-the-hole: “I can’t wait to get home and have it for my tea!”

Those at the sewing sessions are also chuffed at seeing their finished products, having made felted animals, scrunchies, and cushions, with some brave souls even trying to finish full-length crocheted scarves before the end of winter.

Regular attendee Olamide said: “This is loads of fun and I get to make all sorts of things.”

Trinity teacher Mr Carey of Trinity Catholic College told us that nearly every week he gets inundated with sign-ups. And Ms Reed of UCA added: “I love that the kids are so enthusiastic and I love hearing their comments on how they’re enjoying every session.”

We’re just as keen to see students coming back each week in anticipation of their next craft project or delicious dish. More than the “loads of fun” they say they get from working with Kids Kabin, their sense of accomplishment is an even greater reward!
